Hi Friends - I LOVE a Thunderstorm and today was a glorious day for the rain and thunder. Life may feel chaotic, but chaos naturally exists and I find that a thunderstorm is a perfect reminder of that. Plus, a great way to clear the path for sunshine.

MAGICAL MONDAY

The Empress from Sasha Graham’s Dark Wood Tarot Deck!

The Empress from Sasha Graham’s Dark Wood Tarot Deck!

Hi Friends! It’s Magical Monday! Here’s a new card from my most magical friend, Sasha Graham and here’s what she has to say about it! I like the idea that it might be time to “start doing” - something small and beautiful - whatever that means to you!

Happy Monday - Spread Magic,

Hollyxoxo

Every now and then, a tarot card will act as a lifeline. Tarot provides answers, solutions, and reminders for your witching eyes.

Today, the archetype of the Empress is leaping out of the deck, throwing her perfumed arms around you and purring, “Darling,” she whispered, “the way out of your little funk is to start doing. . .”

Enchanting, heavenly Empress represents creativity and regeneration. The Empress can’t stop herself from inventing, making, producing. She fashions things beautifully, she decorates, and she cooks. She writes, reads, paints. She seduces anyone and everyone. She is all acts of creation.

Feel like a hot mess? Confused? Scared? Not eating healthy? Forward progress has halted? Not prepared for summer? Terrified of the future's "new normal"?

Glance at the Empress card again.

“Take a look at me honey,” she says. “See how gorgeous and calm I am? I AM YOU. Now, relax. Where’s your to-do list? Let’s get to work. If you only do one single thing today – do it gorgeously!”

With the Empress by your side, you can feel renewed. Let the magic of the Empress surrounding your every gesture.

Let the Empress remind you of the beauty of creation. Beauty springs from the act of doing. Infinitely more attractive than sitting around complaining about what we aren’t doing.

Pick one thing – it could be something tiny. Perhaps, a flower arrangement, your dinner or an email to a friend. See just how stunning you can make it. Beautiful things aren’t always complicated.

Let your act be a metaphor for the gorgeousness you are capable of when caught in your own act of creation.

You are beautiful and the possibilities are endless ...

Best wishes,
Sasha Graham

A Charlie Brown Christmas Tour! - 2 years casting this tour and 4 casts. So many peanuts - so much joy! #proud2bewojcikseay (more pics below)

Hi Friends! Happy Sunday Funday. The sun is shining even though we are still in quarantine.

This morning I finally motivated myself to do an online exercise class. A huge step forward. It happened to be a class I used to do every Sunday for years (before I moved to Brooklyn). Afro-Fusion Burn with Irina Peschan. This instructor is a ball of energy and a bundle of LIFE. I hadn’t been in this class for about 4 or 5 years, so when I reached out to her for the Zoom link I was definitely nervous. She was thrilled and responded “It took a quarantine to get you to dance with me again?”

I signed into Zoom today and I danced so hard and silly today in my cramped apartment space and I felt extreme joy the entire time. Now, I’ve committed myself to taking class again every week - clearly, it’s feeding my soul.

But, I thought about her question - “It took a quarantine to get you to dance with me again?” She’s right that’s insane. I know I’m in Brooklyn and class is usually in Manhattan on Sunday mornings, but what has been my problem? Note to self: NO MORE EXCUSES - not for the activities and the people that bring joy. So, it’s decided…when the quarantine lifts, I will be getting my lazy butt out of bed and making the trek into Manhattan to dance.

What things have you made excuses to avoid in your pre-quarantine life? Is it time to re-visit them?

In case you are interested in the class follow Afro Fusion Burn with Irina Peschan on Facebook for all of the details and join me for some fun!

In quiet time, there is clarity - you just have to recognize it when it hits you in the face…

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Odd Squad, Live! National Tour - This show was a bundle of fun. This cast had me in stitches - especially the ridiculous villains. Pure, silly comedy! (see more pictures below.)

Odd Squad, Live! National Tour - This show was a bundle of fun. This cast had me in stitches - especially the ridiculous villains. Pure, silly comedy! (see more pictures below.)

Hi Friends! I find it odd to think that I have literally been wearing the same 4-5 pieces of clothing since this quarantine began. Looking into your closet can feel hopeless - will I ever get dressed for work again? Wouldn’t it be nice to throw on a dress and attend someone’s wedding? I look at my boots and reminisce about a time when I wore something other than sneakers or slippers. There are some days, I just give in and stay in pajamas, but mostly I keep trying to suit up for the day, but “suiting up” these days means jeans, sneakers, shirt…..over and over and over again.

But, I was thinking today about how fun and exciting it will be to rediscover and re-fresh your old looks, when things do start to open up again. We can’t go Spring shopping, cause we’re all flat broke, but just imagine how fun it will be when you have a whole “old but new” closet of clothes to reexamine - will you wear things the same or change it up? Is there anything in there that will have to go, because during the quarantine you will have discovered an entirely different you? Maybe it’s time to sift through it all and plan ahead?

I know, silly, but just keep trying to find the silver lining…. Determined to stay positive and enact more forward thinking, even on the smallest level…

Matthew Takes Manahatta - An early show from Vital Theatre Company! More pics below….

Hi Friends! A friend of mine posted on Facebook, in a plea for shared grief or maybe just a rant at the universe, “Life is weird right now”. I found myself responding that “Weird is normal.” Which made me think about this myth of normalcy. In this current situation, I keep hearing on the news about “Going back to normal” and people questioning “When can we go back to normal?” Honestly, I don’t remember “normal” and I think it’s fine if we never find it again. Maybe there’s something beyond this concept of “normal” that is way better than anything we’ve ever experienced. I found this quote from Nicholas Sparks and it really spoke to me:

Screen Shot 2020-04-16 at 5.37.28 PM.png

Life has been “inherently unpredictable” lately and always - maybe we just tried to shove it in a box of normalcy. Here’s hoping we find something more and can finally embrace the unknown…

Newsies at The Engeman Theater - loved this rough & tumble bunch. #seizetheday #proud2bewojcikseay

Newsies at The Engeman Theater - loved this rough & tumble bunch. #seizetheday #proud2bewojcikseay

Hi Friends! Sort of a basic write up that lists a few random, but useful things you can do when you have nothing to do…

  1. Reset all of your on line passwords.

  2. Organize something in your home that you have been putting off. (For me, this will be the spices in our kitchen, which are just shoved into a cabinet and very difficult to get to, when needed).

  3. Fix anything that is broken.

  4. Start a system to track your finances - put that system in place, so you can easily do this as you move forward, even past the quarantine.

  5. PURGE clothing - go through your closet and get rid of anything that you haven’t worn in the last 2 years. Maybe consider if you might wear it, but you just forgot it was there…otherwise PURGE it and make space for new things you may be able to acquire once we are back up and running.

  6. Make a list of your professional contacts that you can reach out to when this has all passed by. And, if you feel like it, start reaching out to them now - just to say hi and check in.

  7. Clean out your “junk drawer”. We all have a “junk drawer” - right?

  8. Categorize photos on your computer/mac. If you are like me, there’s no real organization of photos - who has time for that? Now you do.

  9. Check in on your on line subscriptions - what are you subscribed to? Do you need it? This may factor into #4 - You can eliminate any unnecessary expenses.

  10. Start a “physical challenge”. I’m planking again - everyday for at least 5 minutes (separate minutes). What kind of physical challenge would be fun for you?

If you have any other ideas of random, useful activities, please email me with them - holly@hdbcasting.com. I would be thrilled to have new ideas of things to do!

Stay safe and keep shining, Holly xo

HUMAN TOUCH

Fade In, Fade Out - Musicals Tonight! (more photos of this amazing cast below!)

Fade In, Fade Out - Musicals Tonight! (more photos of this amazing cast below!)

Hi Friends! As a born and bred Jersey Girl, I am basically obligated to be a certified fan of Bruce Springsteen. Also, my boyfriend is a borderline obsessive fan of the boss…and I’ve got to give him my support. Even if I didn’t feel like it was a necessity to be a fan, I do find him to be quite a poet when it comes to song writing and I’ve been thinking about some of his haunting lyrics today and here’s why…

During this quarantine, I have been blessed with zoom conference call gatherings, face-times, google chats - you name the online forum - I’ve participated. I think we all have. We are certainly lucky to have the luxury of technology to help us get through this #alonebut2gether. I have connected with a group of high school friends every week - some amazing ladies that bring me so much joy and hysterical laughter! I am grateful for Champagne Fridays via Zoom with Wojcik/Seay Casting - being apart from my teammates has proven more difficult than I could ever imagine - these are the brilliant souls that I spend Monday-Friday with in good times and stressful times every week… I connect every week via Google Chat with two of my besties - Sasha & Mia to “check in” and plan for the future. Also, to my dear friend from college, Jen, who works around the corner from me, but we never have time to connect in person because of the craziness of real life (this will change). There are facetimes with my parents and my brother - for these moments I am moved beyond words, but there’s also a desperateness to be in the same room, to hug them and to feel them closer to my heart.

I think there is one thing we are learning during this crisis that cannot be denied. Technology is wonderful, but it is no substitution for the real thing. I would give anything to be in the office with Gayle, Scott, Courtney & Nick. I long for Pearl Studios and the smiling, friendly faces and bubbly energy that are unavoidable in the crowded hallways. I cannot wait to see my crazy high school gals in person and throw back a round - from the same bottle. If I could disaparate right now, I’d be in NJ with my family and I would hug them so tight and so long and maybe never let go.

Some lyrics of one of Bruce’s most popular songs rings true to me right now, but in a new light…

Tell me in a world without pity
Do you think what I'm askin's too much?
I just want something to hold on to
And a little of that human touch
Just a little of that human touch

I know we will find a way out of this and, hopefully, soon. I vow to never take these things for granted anymore. I vow to be a better, more open and available human…

Sending you love and light,

Holly xo

MAGICAL MONDAY

Hi Friends! Spring is in the air and this mysterious warm rain storm is proof of that. Here’s another delicious card from my friend’s new Tarot Deck. Cast a spell today - one that allows you to plant seeds for your future. Make it fiery, wild and scrumptious.

Happy Magical Monday - Holly xo

Magical Monday Tarot Card for Spring

Queen of Wands from Dark Wood Tarot

“I want to do to you what spring does with the cherry trees.” ~ Pablo Neruda

Screen Shot 2020-04-13 at 1.43.16 PM.png

Spring wakes everything up. We feel it it the recess of our bones as we rediscover the sun, shed heavy clothing, and bask in lingering twilight evenings. We notice the purple shock of a blooming flower and warm breezes tickle our skin. Can we align our souls with the tremblings of Spring? Can we milk fire’s magic out of a tarot deck? Out of ourselves? I think we can.

Desire and the suit of Wands always carries a physical, visible side effect. The spark of flirtation that brings people together. A flash of passion moving a person or crowd to action. The fire ignited when injustice is witnessed or experienced. The element of longing, that sweet ache, painful deliciousness, toe curling, never satisfying, deep in your bones longing comes straight from Wands.

Become a consort to spring by allowing yourself to melt and slide into summer. Grasp the Wands of desire in your hands. Find what makes you quiver and embrace it every day. Cook a meal like it’s the last one you’ll ever eat. Dig up the garden just to smell the dirt on your skin. Find an old tarot deck and bury your favorite card to see what blossoms. Cast cards in the moonlight and charge your deck by day in the sun. Call forth the fireflies and take destiny into your own hands. Feel fortune rolling in your palm, throw it toward the stars. Let them shower back over you reflecting your own brilliance.

The torchlight of Wands helps me to see perfectly inside of you. You are beautiful. I see infinite winding roads, dark caverns waiting to be filled, and pages of life ready to be written. Just like spring, you’ve only just begun. And no one, not even the greatest psychic in the world, knows what you have in store.

So, on languid spring nights, when no one is watching and you sit alone, shuffle your cards. Let the Wands of tarot light a fire inside of you. Most importantly, let them spark you towards those untraveled places inside yourself.

Let Wands illuminate and warm you from within so as summer arrives, you’ll drip with magic, weave effortless enchantment and conjure your heart and bodily desire.

Cast your cards wisely…

Best wishes,

Sasha Graham

REBIRTH

Above: Baby Shark, Live! Oh, wow, do I love working on this show - these casts and this creative team are a dream come true and I can’t think of anything more fun than hopefully being in auditions for Baby Shark, Live! again this summer!!!!

Hi Friends! Happy Easter! I am not deeply religious, but definitely see the commonalities in all religious belief systems and it seems we all like to celebrate and embrace rebirth! Rebirth can be experienced in many ways at all times, but Spring reflects the epitome of rebirth! Flowers, sunshine, trees re-budding, birds chirping in the mornings…I love it! But Iove the final result of the spring season even more…SUMMER!

Summer is coming. Your summer. My summer. Our summer! We will eventually be released from these prisons. So what do you want to do this summer (after you are re-born)? Time to start thinking and planning…

Tomorrow I am going to make a list (my BF and I make one every year) - Summer Plans. It’s usually a page long with about 30 ideas of what we could do or want to do - museums we’d like to visit, beaches to travel to, picnics, barbecues, outdoor concerts, a few broadway shows etc…. We try to accomplish all of those things, but usually fall short. But, even falling short, we have so much fun just realizing even a part of our list.

I think we could all use some things to look forward to. Start a list!!!

Happy Spring, Holly:)

Note about the photos below: Jesus Christ Superstar - National Tour! Ugh. This show/cast/creative team is amazing. I had tickets to see this again at the Kennedy Center at the end of this month and I was so damn excited. Obviously, I am not going to get to go. (sigh). But, this will be the FIRST thing on my list of things to do this summer….because they will be back! #rebirth #proud2bewojcikseay

MOTHER NATURE

Fun photo from Leave It To Jane - Musicals Tonight! More pics below….

Hi Friends! It was so incredibly lovely to see the sun today. I’m so lucky and grateful to be a member of a community garden in Brooklyn that happens to be right next to my building. So, I spent the day cleaning and getting my little plot ready for some seeds and plants. Other people already have flowers in full bloom and it’s so beautiful and life affirming (especially right now).

This world-wide quarantine is proving to have some very interesting effects on our planet. Ok, so the dolphins in the Venice Canals were a lie (I was so sad about that one), but today on the news I saw that our usually poor air quality is 30% better than last year at this time in the TriState area. That’s pretty amazing. I’ve also seen articles posted about how for the first time in years the Himalayas are visible in India. (picture below)

Screen Shot 2020-04-11 at 8.23.25 PM.png

Here’s a cool article from the Guardian about all of these sudden changes: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/09/climate-crisis-amid-coronavirus-lockdown-nature-bounces-back-but-for-how-long

I hope we all start to learn from the changes we are seeing. Is this pandemic Mother Nature’s way of putting her foot down? Maybe. I feel like I have new respect for nature and a changing perspective on my own personal footprint. Hoping I can change my lifestyle to be kinder and gentler to our planet.

Now go out side (with your masks on and stay 6 ft apart), Holly xo

DO NOTHING

Above: Stills from Naz & Maalik, an amazing film I had the opportunity to work on years back!

Hi Friends! About every third day I wake up all excited to have time on my hands and feeling like there is so much to do! And, then 2 hours in I dissolve into a puddle of nothingness where I remain for the rest of the day. Today was that day! I accomplished….absolutely nothing. I tried to read - couldn’t focus. I tried to watch a movie - made it only a half an hour through. I did stretch! I started to write. But, mostly, I sat around with my thoughts feeling paralyzed. Awesome. But, I have started to change my perspective on this - I think this is absolutely allowed. Perhaps by giving in to the lethargy, you are doing a whole lot!

Here’s a cool article that someone shared about pressure to produce in this time and how that it might not be the best thing for you. For me, every third day is a wash. But, maybe I need that to digest this situation. Our brains, hearts and spirits are working overtime right now…and we only have time to absorb this. Be gentle to yourselves! It’s ok to do nothing.

Kindness abounds in the cast of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Live! There have been so many delightful and excellent casts on this tour over the years. I love the message of this show, too!

Hi Friends - I’m now deep in the “Unemployment Shuffle” and feel as if trying to file a claim is a bit like going into battle. My heart goes out to all of you who have been dealing with this for weeks already. So many of you have been incredibly helpful with thoughts, comments, alternate numbers to try and I am going at it quite strong. I’ve even reached out to my Assembly Rep and Senator! But, all this effort makes me a little tired…

So just wanted to make sure you know that Nap Time is an excellent part of a quarantine routine. In our apartment we call it a “re-sleep”, because we feel like it loses the stigma of “nap time”. But, seriously, allow yourself a little rest from all of this each afternoon, if you can. The news feed is exhausting, the pressure to “do things” is exhausting, checking on friends and relatives can be exhausting and calling Unemployment as your new full time job is definitely…exhausting! Take a break - shut your eyes and drift away from it all. You deserve it!

Sweet dreams, Holly:)

MAGICAL MONDAY

The High Priestess Card - From Tarot of the Vampires - Sasha Graham

The High Priestess Card - From Tarot of the Vampires - Sasha Graham

Hi Friends! It’s Magical Monday! I have spent most of the day dialing the number for the labor department to finalize my claim for unemployment and I can’t think of anything more UNmagical. What a mess! Sympathy to all who have been through this already. I’m not sure they have anyone answering the phone lines there. But, I am embracing the darkness of it all and giving in to the fact that I will have to listen to that robot voice probably a million more times only to be disconnected. But maybe the full moon will change my luck tonight…

As promised, here is a new card pulled by my awesome friend, Sasha Graham, for all of us on Magical Monday!

Magical Monday - The High Priestess

A fat full moon is occurring on Tuesday, April 7th. Full moon magic is about infusing yourself with strength, power, and potential. Moon cycles mirror the natural ebb and flow of our lives. That sweet moon is you.

The High Priestess tarot card is aspected by the moon’s lunar glow. The High Priestess reaches into the folds of her dress, grabs the moon and flings it into the night sky so you can find yourself reflected in it. She represents the deepest parts of yourself, your psyche, and your inner state. She is the key to who you are.

Once, not too long after September 11th, I sat on a flight, gripped with fear and anxiety. I was around midnight and I was halfway between New York and London and peering out the window. The Atlantic’s endless expanse was spread out beneath me. I’d never seen anything so dark and deep. I’d never felt so small, so scared. The High Priestess was there, caressing every rolling black wave.

The High Priestess hides in a gaping vampire mouth, in the yawning expanse of a freshly dug grave. She creeps our of your childhood closet, and is often found lurking under your bed. If your fears reside in the darkness, it is the High Priestess who emerges in lunar shadows. It is she who dares you to face them.

You see, The High Priestess knows, when you face the unknown, when you challenge yourself, when you confront what scares you – you grow. You grow in ways that can hardly be imagined. You are born again. And that’s what April’s rites and rituals are all about. Rebirth. Miracles. The life springing from a long dark sleep. This is the magic that make way for summer nights and delights.

You, my dear, harbor that same light. This life giving energy resides inside your darkness.

Tonight, be brave. Turn out all the lights. Sit in the shadows. Welcome April’s moon with all of its mystery, emotion, and exquisiteness.

And welcome your High Priestess. She’s waiting for you . . .

This is the High Priestess card from the Tarot of the Vampyres.

Two of my favorite birdbrains from Flight School at Vital Theatre Company!

Two of my favorite birdbrains from Flight School at Vital Theatre Company!

Hi Friends!

As we have slowly given in to our new found “normal” with loads of free time on our hands and a news cycle that is really heavy on the heart, I appreciate that we are all experiencing this sudden change in different ways. How we choose to confront this may vary….Some of us rush to stay pro-active and relevant - some of us dive into the obscurity of it all - some of us find grounding in daily activities - some of us produce videos, sing songs and put ourselves out there - some of us retreat into the pages of a book. Most of us will do a combination of all of these things and more, as our emotions and needs change day to day. I think all of this is worthwhile and that any way you choose to confront this crisis and the solitude of confinement is to be accepted and respected!

Early on as a part of my own journey, I decided to blog and express myself in this way on my website. For me, this helps me to connect to my own thoughts and feelings as I sort through all of these new realities and I hope that just by sharing it in my small corner of the world, this may help one or two others out there to feel less alone.

As I am now paying attention to my own thoughts and feelings more than ever, a strange kind of clarity is creeping in…and it’s very liberating! So, PAY ATTENTION TO YOURSELF - those thoughts you have always had about goals, but also beyond goals - write them down. If new thoughts emerge that surprise you - write them down. Start taking notes on all those little thoughts that pop in - and maybe, at the end of this struggle, you will have built a personal new road map for your life! It’s worth a try…

Anyway, Happy Sunday! xo Holly

MEMORY LANE

Above: All Shook Up and Dead Man’s Cellphone at Millbrook Playhouse.

Hi Friends! Today IS a new day! Yesterday was rough. It felt a little like my battery had run out or my light switch had gone off. I think we need to allow for these moments - to feel a little shut off and accept this. We are all absorbing so much in our personal captivity. Be kind to yourself - live in the moment and accept those moments when you just need to retreat!

But, today, I knew I had a date with the Artistic Director of Millbrook Playhouse to chat about my time at the barn, both as an actor and in casting. David, the AD, actually directed me in a show in 2007!!! Just before I jumped on the Insta Live Chat, I took a trip down Memory Lane (as they say) and went through all my old photos from my days at Millbrook. It really brought me great joy to remember all of those fun moments. Difficult moments, at times, but over all, delightful. So many memories popped up for me that I had forgotten.

Take a moment to remember your own joyful moments doing theatre. The work is hard and long, but when those lights come up and the music starts playing….goosebumps. For theatre people, it all pays off in ways that money will never define.

The think I love about Millbrook Playhouse - the community loves it’s theatre so much and really really loves the actors that come to work in the barn. So, it wasn’t a lot of money, it was truly hard work in very hot weather, but there was so much love and support that it just made my time so magical there.

This is what we will need to find to rebuild our own industry and community. Think of how exciting it will all be when this has lifted and we all get to work again. I, personally, cannot wait.

Happy Friday, Holly

TODAY...

Above: The cast of Peace, Love & Cupcakes at Vital Theatre! One of my favorite group of humans! Also, I loved the character of Lexi - she didn’t speak at all until her friends helped her find her voice - and then she has a lot to say!

Hi Friends! Today I’m at a loss for words….and that’s ok! I leave the words of others here for you to digest!

Stay healthy, courageous and strong! Holly xo
