SYNOPSIS: The Kitchen follows three generations of a family as a well-intentioned renovation threatens to destroy their rent-controlled Manhattan home. When Evelyn surprises her grandmother Mildred with a gleaming new kitchen, the gift spirals into a legal battle that forces the family to confront decades of buried secrets and the brutal economics of contemporary housing. A dark comedy of inheritance and loyalty, The Kitchen asks what we’re willing to sacrifice to preserve both the places we live and the histories they contain.
EVELYN (F, 30s) An attractive and stylish social media company executive and a fair housing advocate. Evelyn is passionate and driven with a relentless optimism that can occasionally look like callousness for the feelings of others.
JOE (M, 30s) Evelyn’s boyfriend. A buff and easy-going guy from Iowa. Joe’s tendency to accommodate and joke along are challenged by his fiancé’s latest great idea.
MRS. DONAHUE (F, 50s-60s) The nosy, longtime next-door neighbor – a former glamour queen. Her determination to one up Mildred leads her inquisitive nature and tendency to manipulate into a place she might not have wished to go.
MILDRED (F, 60s-70s) Charming, eccentric and very deadpan, Mildred often lacks a filter. She enjoys putting others in their place, whilst ignoring the complicated realities around her. Her determination to one up Mildred leads her inquisitive nature and tendency to manipulate into a dangerous place.
BRAD (M, 30s). Evelyn’s cousin. A recent MBA/Law grad and newly practicing attorney, Brad is often the voice of reason. He is determined to make things work out.
THOMAS (M, 30s) - Previously incarcerated Thomas’ determined to make up for lost time and prove himself worthy in his mother‘s eyes. He is part of the venture capital group that now runs Mildred's building. He is push for success is not at the expense of an affability that can disarm and charm.
